Seasonal Tips
Welcome to our new seaonal tips page.
January Tips 2010.
Egrow has decided to include this page due to the exceptional weather we are having at the moment.
There are a few things that gardeners need to do at this time of the year. The exceptional cold weather does mean that we have to keep an eye on what is happening to our gardens. I would hope that you have already been vigilant enough to protect any frost tender plants. You can do this with fleece or straw depending on the type of plant being protected.
Beware when we have any heavy snowfalls that the weight of the snow does not harm any weak plant parts or lie in the centre of a plant and cause it to split open iin the centre.
Feed the birds. This is essential at this time of the year. They will reward you in the coming months by eating up all the pests that can give you trouble without you having to buy expensive chemicals and most important prevent you from harming the environment. You can put out peanuts (in special feeders,to prevent birds choking), fatballs and a mix of seeds in either special feeders or on a bird table. It is also very important to ensure every day that there is a fresh supply of water. It is freezing so quickly these days. Make sure you check it each morning if possible. Perhaps you can incorporate this into your morning routine for the next few months. The spring birdsong will repay you!!! Also you are making a very valuable contribution to helping to preserve our wildlife. This is equally important as composting.
Compost all uncooked vegetable kitchen waste, potato peelings, teabags, eggshells, small amount of newspaper and cardboard eggboxes. Do NOT use anything which has been contaminated with salt, as when used this will go into your soil and can prevent plants growing.
